What is an appraisal?
An appraisal is a professionally written report describing gemstones and jewelry, and valuing the item for a specific purpose.... such as protecting the homeowner on their insurance policy, helping the owner who may wish to sell the item, or allowing families to divide jewelry among future recipients.
I encourage my clients to sit with me while I review their jewelry and then depart with their items when I finish my work. When we make our appointment, we identify the approximate number of pieces, estimate the required time to perform the work and determine the fee.
I ask clients to bring with them any reports or old appraisals which may correctly state accurate weights of gemstones, as I do NOT remove gemstones to evaluate them. Every appraisal includes color photographs of each piece, and I recommend that these photos and the appraisal report be kept in a safe place for future reference.
I am available to travel out of town to perform appraisals for businesses or individuals, and I am pleased to provide my services at clients’ homes, when traveling to my office is inconvenient.
Cost of services
Fees for appraisals, repairs and other laboratory services begin at $25, and can almost always be determined by phone. Fees vary with the complexity of the gemstone, the piece and/or the type of appraisal required. Appraisal fees are charged only once; updates are provided over the years upon your request, at no additional charge. Fees are never based on the appraised values. They are based on a cost per piece, or hourly cost, whichever results in a lower fee
to the client.
